How to choose your SkiMo & Telemark Boots

Skimo & telemark boots are the medium via which your body and your skis interact.

Consequently it is crucial that you have all the necessary information to choose the right product. With this SCARPA ski mountaineering boots guide, you will be able to reach that right level of expertise, whether you are trying ski mountaineering for the first time or are an expert in the field.

The main parts that make up a ski boot are the shell and the cuff, which are the exterior shell, the fastening systems that allow the locking of the latter and the ski/walk mechanism that must be functional and simple to use even when you are wearing gloves. The thermoformable liner is also essential, which is why SCARPA has a worldwide exclusive for ski mountaineering with the Intuition brand, guaranteeing quality and comfort. Last but not least, there is the sole, which must guarantee grip and safety when you are walking, with your skis on your backpack, and doing some mountaineering, with or without crampons.

Here are the most important features to consider:

Mondopoint

All SCARPA ski mountaineering boots are designed with Mondopoint sizes, with the exception of the Alien 3.0, which is made in European sizes.

To choose the best size, all you have to do is consult the Size Guide to see the conversion of the size that you usually wear and the Mondopoint size in the last column.

THERMOFORMING

Once you’ve selected the size, it is essential that you take the boots to be thermoformed at a specialised store. You can find the list of Scarpa Thermoformers here.

In doing so, the liner will fit your feet perfectly, ensuring a long-lasting comfortable fit without being too tight in any areas. We know that foot shape changes from person to person and that to maintain long-lasting performance the boot liner must be thermoformed to your foot. That is why we rely on the expertise of Intuition, which makes boot liners that guarantee the state of the art in this fundamental component.

When getting your boot liners thermoformed, you should wear light socks or those you normally wear when ski mountaineering, as thermal insulation is guaranteed by the liners.

RANGE OF MOTION

The range of motion is the degree of movement that the ski boots allow your feet thanks to the capacity of the cuff to move forward or backward from the base of the shell. The more mobile this is, the more agile the boots will let you be when doing uphill and downhill runs.

In our race ski boots, the range of motion can exceed 70° to allow athletes to walk, climb and turn easily.

Last width

The width of the inner last is also an important variable. Generally, they can be divided into 3 categories based on the feeling that a skier is looking for from their boots.

  • The narrow last is 99-mm wide on the forefoot and it is suitable for ski mountaineers who are looking for extreme precision in terms of fit. Thus you will find it in our racing styles.
  • The average last varies in width on the forefoot of around 100 to 101 mm. For people looking for a high-performance and comfortable ski boot.
  • The wide last is suitable for skiers who are looking for comfort when touring, also in relation to performance duration. The forefoot width is 102 mm.

RAMP ANGLE and FORWARD LEAN

Ramp angle is the angle of the heel in comparison to the boot board, thus this affects the skier’s fore/aft balance on the skis, the position of their joints and their subsequent physical response. As this angle increases, it facilitates a downhill position.

Forward Lean, on the other hand, is the angle of the cuff in comparison to the boot board. In all SCARPA’s ski mountaineering boots, you can adjust this angle according to your needs, to the extent shown in the product description

LINERS

The four-lever styles are best suited for downhill runs, while the three-lever styles provide greater uphill dynamics.

In some styles, however, the BOA Fit System® is integrated into the ski boot, which is a patented system that allows you to adjust the fastening on the boots long-term, without there being any tight areas, by using a dial connected to extra-strong, light laces and a low friction control to make micro-adjustments.

CORRECT BOOT USAGE

Before using your ski boots check:

  • Use socks allowing good perspiration and providing perfect fit. Avoid using cotton socks, as they retain moisture.
  • That before locking the binding, the gap between the boot and the binding is clear from snow, mud, soil.
  • That all boot buckling systems are adequately fastened.

BOOT CLEANING AND STORAGE

SCARPA boots are designed to cut down maintenance to the minimum and to make them easy to clean.

Follow the instructions below to make the best of their performance and extend their life:

  • Use a plastic brush to remove dirt to avoid scratching boot surface;
  • Clean your boots with a wet cloth dipped in neutral cleanser (like standard body cleanser). Never use aggressive chemical substances (acid or alkaline), alcohol or solvents. Rinse surfaces after cleaning.
  • Allow your boots to dry thoroughly before storing them. Never place the shell in contact with, or near, a heat source which could melt it, alter its shape, or weaken plastic.
  • Do not use a hairdryer to dry your boots: it could damage them irreparably.
  • Dry the inner shoes slowly and far from direct heat sources. Do not place them on heating bodies, near flames (stoves or fireplaces) or inside heating devices (dryers, ovens, etc.). You could damage them irreparably.
  • Store your boots in a cool, well-ventilated dry place. To avoid warping your boots, remember not to fasten the buckles too tight before storing them. We recommend you store your boots in their original package. Do not store your boots in direct sunlight as it can cause colours to fade and, over time, damage plastic.
  • Never expose your boots to temperatures exceeding 45°C (Centigrade) or 113°F (Fahrenheit), for instance inside a car boot in direct sunlight.

BOOT REPAIR

Should your boots be damaged do not attempt to repair them. Never ski wearing a damaged boot!

In case of a fall or boot damage we recommend youhave your boots checked and repaired exclusively by one of our retailers, or by a specialised professional operator.

For any other specific information regarding boot repair, we recommend you contact your authorized SCARPA retailer.
